APPLICATION INFO:

  • Highly efficient metal removal, defect & crack repairs, weld removal, edge preparation, etc
  • Use with gouging carbon rods + DC power source + compressed air
  • Use with 5mm - 13mm gouging carbons
  • Requires DC Power Source with minimum 300 Amps output

HOW IT WORKS;

  • Air arc gouging process is similar to arc/stick welding, in some respects. The gouging torch/handpiece holds a gouging carbon rod, like a stick welding electrode holder.
  • The carbon rod creates an arc when in contact with the metal workpiece and is consumed during gouging.
  • The torch is connected to a welding machine / power source and to compressed air supply.
  • When the air valve on handpiece is opened, this forces air down through a copper jaw/nozzle, and down one side of the carbon rod.
  • The operator drags the carbon rod across the job, this creates molten metal in the "arc zone" which is then pushed away by the air jet.
  • Gouging carbons are available in different sizes, the choice of size will depend on the capacity of the welder / power source and/or the volume/thickness of metal to be removed.

TYPICAL SET UP:

Following is a commonly-used configuration. Note this can vary depending on the welder/power source and user preferences.

Power Cable/ Connections:

  • Short length of welding cable with cable lug on one end and male cable joiner/connector on the other.
  • This short cable is bolted to terminal on gouging torch cable, other end is connected/joined to a longer cable.
  • Longer cable is connected back to the welding machine / power source.
  • Cable size will depend on: amperage capacity required, welding or power source capacity, and/or gouging carbon rod size used. As minimum amps required for gouging are around 300A, cable size used is typically at least 35mm2 or 50mm2.

Air Hose / Connections:

  • Short length of 10mm ID air hose, one end crimped to air fitting/nipple on gouging torch cable terminal & other end fitted with male air fitting (eg nitto style, or user preference).
  • Short air hose is then connected to longer air supply hose from air compressor.
